Chapter 14

I have to admit that driving around town with my dad was awesome. He hadn’t been there to teach me to drive or at my wedding or at the birth of my children. But here I was, cruising through the winding roads of Bath with my dad sitting next to me. Sorta.

The township was home to hills and valleys, twists and turns. Any road you chose was scenery at its best.

“Drive down Ira Road,” Dad said. “I want to see the Firestone Estate. Always loved that property.”

Ah, yes. The Firestone property—the tire company Firestone. Raymond Firestone, Harvey’s son, had bought fifteen hundred acres of land on Ira Road. He and his first wife, Laura, had named it Lauray Farms, a combination of both their names. Most of the land had been sold in 1987 to Ohio State University, but Bath had bought over four hundred acres, which had become Bath Nature Reserve. Anyone could hike or stroll along the main paths and enjoy nature. There was also a horse trail, marshy areas, and general outdoor loveliness. Akron University, the last time I’d paid attention, had been using the property to conduct a study of wetlands. Even though it was quite popular with dog walkers, it was never jam-packed with people.

I shook my head. “Dad, they sold it off, and now it is a subdivision of homes, along with Bab’s Orchards up in Richfield.” I’d grown up eating those wonderful apples and had cried when the old couple had shut the orchard down. I understood they were older and tired, but I missed the crisp, sweet taste no other orchard in the area could match.

In my peripheral vision, I could see the shock on his face. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

I chanced a quick glance at him. “I thought you were up to date on the area,” I said. “You know, keeping up with the news.”

Shaking his head, he said, “Anything that affects you, yes. I don’t bother with the rest, too much happening too quickly.”

I thought about that for a minute before answering, “Yeah, I know what you mean. Seems as though even the living can’t keep up with world events.”

“World events?” he asked. “I’m not talking about the world; I mean here in Bath. People leaving, people moving in, being born, dying. It’s busy.”

I shot him a quick look of surprise. “Really? I had no idea.”

He snorted. “Babe, you need to keep up with the excitement!”

“I don’t have the energy to keep up with the social news.”

Nodding, he said, “That’s why you love living on that hill.”

Yeah, my dad knew me pretty well for not having been alive since I was a kid. Amazing. “How much do you know about me?”

“Pretty much everything there is to know. I was there when you graduated, got married, had your babies, when your mom died. Hell, I was even waiting for your mother on the other side.”

“How’d that go?”

He laughed the belly laugh I had missed for so long before saying, “She was not happy to see me.
